How to get Black Tabby
Farm the Dalaran area in Hillsbrad Foothills for the Cat Carrier (Black Tabby). Dalaran Spellscribe is the notable high-chance target listed by the Classic companion guide, with the guide estimating roughly a 16% drop rate, while other nearby Dalaran enemies can drop the carrier at much lower rates. Dalaran Spellscribe is hostile to Horde rather than Alliance, so Alliance collectors usually buy the bind-on-use carrier from another player or the Auction House, or farm other eligible Dalaran-area enemies.
Farm Dalaran Spellscribe for the best-known chance
The Classic companion guide identifies Dalaran Spellscribe as the preferred target for Black Tabby and gives the rare NPC an estimated drop chance around 16 percent. Other Dalaran-area enemies can also drop the carrier, but at substantially lower rates.
This is the old Dalaran area in Hillsbrad Foothills, not the Northrend city introduced in Wrath of the Lich King.
Faction matters when farming Black Tabby
Dalaran Spellscribe is an Alliance-aligned rare, which gives Horde characters the straightforward direct farm. Alliance collectors cannot simply camp and kill the same NPC.
Because Cat Carrier (Black Tabby) binds when used, Alliance collectors can buy one from the Auction House or receive one through trade. The Classic guide also notes that surrounding Dalaran enemies can provide a lower-chance Alliance farming route.
Black Tabby was once called Maine Coon
The companion had an earlier name, Maine Coon, before the pet was renamed Black Tabby during original World of Warcraft. Old comments and database records still refer to the previous name.
For collection purposes, those historical references point to the same companion rather than a separate cat.
Old Alterac saying: "A cat has nine lives, but needs only one."
