WoW Forever Makes Companion Collecting a Real Way to Play

WoW Forever's collection system removes the bag-space penalty from companion collecting and makes collecting every pet a practical long-term goal.

WoW Forever finally gives companion collectors room to actually collect.

Once a pet is learned, it goes into your collection instead of permanently occupying your bags or bank. For anyone who wants every companion in Azeroth, that removes the biggest practical problem with collecting pets in Classic.

More importantly, Blizzard now has a system built to support a growing collection. With new pets already appearing throughout the Forever beta, it is reasonable to expect a lot more companions as the game expands.

Collect them all without destroying your bank

Anyone who collected heavily in Classic knows the problem. Every companion was another item competing for limited storage alongside gear, consumables, profession materials, event items, and everything else your character accumulated.

Forever gets rid of that tradeoff. Learn the pet and it joins your collection, leaving your normal inventory available for the rest of the game.

That means collecting every pet is actually practical instead of something that eventually requires dedicating a large part of your bank to the hobby.

Forever is already giving us new pets to find

The beta is also showing that Blizzard is willing to put companions in some interesting places.

The Baby Crocolisk comes from the Sewer Beast in Stormwind. The Excitable Slime is hidden behind a /dance interaction in Undercity. The Musical Gustjumper responds to /sing on Zephras Isle, while the Spectral Bear Cub comes from the Legacy Reward Track.

That is a good start because it gives collectors reasons to do more than visit a list of vendors. Old rares can matter again, new zones can hide secrets, professions and events can add their own rewards, and ordinary parts of Azeroth can suddenly be worth investigating.

The Excitable Slime and Musical Gustjumper are particularly encouraging. Both reward players for experimenting with the world rather than simply following an obvious quest marker. If Forever keeps adding companions like these, testing suspicious critters and strange NPCs may become part of exploring new content.

We should expect more companion pets

Blizzard did not need a dedicated collection system to support the relatively small number of pets we have confirmed today. Building one makes considerably more sense if companions are intended to remain an ongoing collectible throughout Forever.

We already know there are additional companion records in the beta data whose acquisition methods have not been discovered or confirmed. We do not count those as obtainable pets until players actually find them, but their presence adds to the evidence that the current roster is only the beginning.

Forever is also designed to keep expanding Azeroth at level 60. Companion pets fit that model extremely well because they remain desirable without needing to increase player power. A new zone, rare spawn, profession recipe, holiday, quest chain, or hidden interaction can add another collectible without replacing anything players earned before it.

Classic had pets. Forever supports collecting them.

Companion collecting has always been part of WoW. Forever is simply giving the hobby the infrastructure it always needed.

The pets can still come from obscure vendors, difficult drops, professions, holidays, strange quests, and secrets hidden around Azeroth. Now we can actually keep chasing all of them without eventually turning our banks into pet storage.

If the discoveries from the beta are any indication, that collection should have plenty of room to grow.
